I thrive in what can sometimes be a very chaotic environment. I find that I can find focus in arenas where things are moving very quickly and being able to lead a team through that in a constructive way and a focused sort of fashion, I find passion in that. Rebecca Lee’s grandparents grew up in adjoining villages outside Guangzhou in the southeast of China and later immigrated to San Francisco, where her grandfather went into the restaurant business in the city’s famous Chinatown. He worked his entire career at the well-known Sam Wo restaurant, believed to be the oldest Chinese restaurant in the city.
Over the years during family visits, Rebecca developed a passion for Chinese culture and especially its food, whether humble, delicious home-cooked meals by her grandmother or multi-hour dim sum extravaganzas orchestrated by her grandfather. Although her grandparents never learned much English, there was always a way to connect and bond over a shared plate of food. During her college years, Rebecca double majored in Asian American studies and Fine Art, waiting tables on the side. In 2006 she made her way to Austin, and eventually transitioned from waiting tables to management. She worked side by side with her husband for many years, each tackling the front and back of house side of catering, and various culinary driven special events throughout Austin. In 2015, she landed a position at Chameleon Companies as they were preparing to open Wu Chow, an authentic, farm-fresh and modern Chinese restaurant in the heart of downtown Austin. Inspired by the menu’s dedication to elevated Chinese cuisine – a rarity in the culinary landscape of Austin – she dove into her work and quickly earned her place as General Manager. Guiding and supporting her dedicated staff through the fast-paced routines of a bustling restaurant, Rebecca thrives on maintaining focus amidst the colorful tumult of the Wu Chow experience. The challenges of working in a Chinese- speaking kitchen often feels reminiscent of home, where a common language is forged through the sights, smells, and tastes of the dinner table. Wu Chow continues to inspire Rebecca with its dedication to providing authentic and sophisticated Chinese food to the eclectic culture of Austin. |
