Born in Santiago, Chile, Lisa Watel’s career wasn’t always about the culinary scene. After moving to Houston, Texas, as a young woman, she initially wanted to go into the fashion industry. Always a fashionista, she was drawn to the artistry and passion of the business and explored sketching haute couture designs until she realized that her obsession with creating stunning designs became rivaled by her approach with cooking and plating both delicious and visually stunning cuisine. She soon realized she was more fulfilled with the artistry associated with the culinary arts versus fashion arts and obtained a Culinary Arts degree from the Art Institute of Houston.
During her time in culinary school, she started her own catering business to fund her newly found passion. Her charm and expert networking skills led to some amazing connections within the culinary scene and even inspired some of her fellow culinary students and teachers to work with her catering business. Through her skillful connections and once graduated, Lisa’s social contacts shared that actor Tommy Lee Jones was in need of a private chef. She went for it, and for nine years, it was Lisa’s honor and pleasure to serve Mr. Jones and his family. During her culinary career, Lisa has traveled the world, trying international cuisine and adding her own flair. Through her travels, she met her now-husband and business partner, Damien Watel. Once married, they settled in San Antonio and quickly became a culinary duo to be reckoned with in the culinary scene. The chefs and owners of Bistr09, Lisa and Damien offer classic French brasserie cuisine in San Antonio’s Alamo Heights neighborhood. |
