My life lesson is being gritty and having the confidence to step into stages where you might not be what people expect. Amanda Turner is the executive chef of Juniper in Austin, Texas.
Amanda has been cooking in Austin for nine years. Prior to becoming executive chef at Juniper, she spent time at some of the most lauded restaurants in town, including Uchi, Uchiko, East Side King, and Odd Duck — where she was the opening baker and overseer of the bread program. A member of Juniper’s staff since its inception, Amanda is a prolific contributor to the seasonal menu offerings, including house-made pastas, charcuterie, pastries, fermentation projects and more. In 2017, Amanda was awarded a grant through the Ment’or BKB Program for continuing education. This grant provides offers up-and-coming chefs opportunities through intern experiences at some of the world’s top restaurants. Amanda leveraged this opportunity to spend nearly four months in Japan working at Den, the number two restaurant in Asia and on the World’s 50 Best, as well as at the acclaimed Ryugin in Tokyo. When Amanda isn’t in the kitchen, she enjoys watching anime, learning Japanese, traveling to distant lands, gardening, and spending time with her partner James and their two cats Bincho and Soba. |
